What is an IUD?

An intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective, reversible long-lasting form of birth control that can be inserted into the uterus. IUDs are a popular choice for many women because they are more than 99% effective at preventing pregnancy. It does not require daily or weekly attention like some other forms of birth control and can last for up to 8 years.

When you visit our clinic for your preliminary consultation, it will be conducted by our experienced and specialized team of Physicians. Our Birth Control Options

Hormonal IUD

  • Mirena

    It may be used for up to 8 years for birth control if inserted after the age of 25 otherwise needs to be replaced after 5 years.

  • Below are more situations when Mirena should be replaced after 5 years:

    The IUD is being used for endometrial protection in PCOS.

    The IUD is being used for endometrial protection in menopause.

  • Kyleena

    It may be used for up to 5 years for birth control.

Copper IUD

Maybe used for up to 5 years effectively at which it needs to be removed or replaced, it can be used as an emergency contraceptive.

Implant (Nexplanon)

The implant is effective for 3 years for birth control.

Birth Control Injection (Depo-Provera)

It needs to be given every 13-14 weeks.

At Zia IUD Clinic, we ensure that the IUD insertion process is comfortable and smooth (If the patient already has a prescription/device, consultation is not mandatory before an insertion):

  1. Referral from physician:

    Please have your family physician send us a referral through fax at 780-306-8401

  2. Consultation:

    We begin with a thorough consultation to discuss your health history, contraceptive needs, and any concerns you may have. We do pregnancy and STI tests prior to insertion.

  3. Insertion:

    The insertion process is quick and typically done in the clinic. Our skilled healthcare provider will insert the IUD; the procedure takes just a few minutes.

  4. Follow-Up:

    We provide post-insertion care instructions and address any questions you may have.

  • Yes, there are two main types of IUDs: hormonal and non-hormonal (copper). Hormonal IUDs release progestin, a synthetic hormone, while copper IUDs have copper wire wrapped around them.

  • The lifespan of an IUD varies depending on the type. Hormonal IUDs typically last between 3 to 7 years, while copper IUDs can last up to 5 years.

  • Some women may experience discomfort during insertion, similar to menstrual cramps. However, the discomfort is typically brief and manageable. Your healthcare provider can provide pain relief options if needed.

  • Common side effects may include irregular bleeding, cramping, and changes in menstrual patterns, especially during the first few months after insertion. Serious complications are rare but can include expulsion or perforation of the uterus.

  • Fertility usually returns immediately after IUD removal. Some women may conceive within days, while others may take a few months to resume normal fertility.

  • Most partners cannot feel the IUD during intercourse. The strings of the IUD, which are left outside the cervix, may be felt occasionally, but they typically soften over time.

  • Physician Consultation is covered by Alberta Health & Many insurance plans cover some or all of the cost of an IUD. It's best to check with your insurance provider to understand your coverage.

  • No, IUDs do not protect against STIs. It's important to use condoms or other barrier methods if you are at risk of contracting an STI.
